I am new to all of this, and i could really use some advice... i called a debt settlement company that told me my debt would be paid off in 58 months and they charge a $50 fee (included in the monthly payment) which would end up being $2900. then i came across this site and decided to try and do it by my self but i'm really not sure how to start? My credit cards are with FIA (bank of america), chase, home depot and american express. My total is about $24,000. Advice???

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!!!! we settled with american express. we were about 120 days and they sent it off to nco. amex would not budge at 75% and we ended up with 55% with nco. bal was 5340.27 and they got 2938.00.
now we only have home depot which is at 150 days, so i am hoping to be done with this real soon....

I've been reading these boards and researching but how is everyone getting the $ to actually settle? The only spare $ I'll have is what I don't pay in minimum payments. On 16k chase at 30% I'd need 4800.00 which isn't 6 months of payments. Figure 5 months payments 1635 still would leave me needing 3165. The only way to pay that would be to put 3165 on another credit card. Which kind of defeats the purpose granted though 3k balance is better than 16k

Many people bank the money instead of paying what they would normally pay on the card, allowing themselves to be behind. That way you have a lump sum of money to work with.
