Difference between settling with CC company vs Collection agency

This forum has been very helpful in educating me to settle my CC debt myself. I still need a little clarification on the difference between settling with the CC company versus settling with a collection agency. My credit report will be better if I settle with the CC company, correct? But I may get a lower settlement from the collection agency, correct?

it really all comes down to how far past due you are and if the

Past due is past due and charge off is charge off, doesnt matter who you pay....neither will improve your credit.

I'm still confused because I'm reading many post that say settle with the CC company if you can before the accoutn gets charged off. Please someone concisely explain which route I shoudl take.
