So far Debt Impact seems to have the highest rating by the BBB dept settlement co's. They receive a B rating.
They also charge on the gross amount rather than performance based.
What other companies receive good ratings from the BBB?

If you want to avoid a potential nightmare situation then you need to do it yourself. If you want help doing it, then I would investigate one of those companies that coaches you through the process. That's the only one I ever considered, but was able to settle quite easily and never did go with any of them.

Please disregard the BBB ratings. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but those ratings are not reliable. As evidenced by Senator Rockefeller's senate committee hearings on regulated the debt settlement companies. If so many of the companies have A ratings, why are there so many egregious practices?
I used a company called removed. Their DIY program helped me settle $130k of debt for $40k. It took 6 months and only cost $1150. A pittance compared to what the average company charges. Give them a buzz. They were life savers for me!
