Am I headed up the wrong tree

I decided to go with DebtSolutions and after the first month i am questioning the high fee with only one contact to my creditors. Am I to expect for my creditors to after some six to eight months to write my debt to them off and then get a settlement amount from DebtSolutions?
I have talked to them on numerous occasions. friendly as can be and full of answers. I was told this last time that my being past due for some time is when they start negotiations. Is this any way to do things in this business. This high fee and they seem to be sitting on their butts until I am a write off. I know this is not right.
Should i stop dealing with them and does anyone know the procedure to quit and what they might do in retaliation?
