First National calling practices

My husband and I have both received calls from First National attempting to collect on debts that are not ours. As far as we can tell, they are calling random people with the same name as the people they are actually attempting to collect from.
They repeatedly ask us to provide the last 4 digits of our social security numbers in order for us to "prove" to them that we are not the responsible parties. We have not done this (what makes them think we would be truthful about it anyway, I wonder).
What can or should we do to stop them calling us when we are not the ones that incurred the debts?

You need to send them (you can fax it but it's preferable to send letters via certified mail) a cease and desist letter. You can also send them a verification letter to make them prove that you owe them money, but it's not necessary. There is a good template for a cease and desist letter in the DIY section of this site.
Also, do not give them any of your sensitive information like your social security number unless they can prove you owe them money. You did a good thing keeping it from them!
