I think I am going to stop payments and try to settle after 6 months or so, Im just not sure about the potential for lawsuits and judgements against me.

If you take the settlement route, there is always a distinct possibility of being sued.
IMHO, keep in contact with the cc's.
I beleive that lessens the chance of a lawsuit.
