DOD Wage Garnishment

I want to know how to settle a debt with the Department of Defense with very little income. My options now are to pay a monthly sum almost equal to what I make or wait for wage garnishment. I was making payments until I received a letter six months past the date the letter was written informing me my payments had gone up to an amount I couldn't afford. I sent two letters requesting a return to a more managable payment amount without reply until they sent the notice for wage garnishment.
