Is there an advantage to working with the lender who has charged off my 2nd (Home Equity Loan) vs. letting them send it to a Collection Agency and then negotiating payment with them?

Yes, it is always better to deal with the original lender or creditor than the collection agencies. Moreover, in order to remove the charge-off you will have to deal with the lender.

are two contrasting statements. I am confused. In the first sentence you are talking about a charge-off, and in the second one you are talking of letting the lender send the account to collections. However, an account is automatically sent to collection agency when it is charged off.
