If you want to settle your debts on your own, you need to make a detailed list of all your debts. Check how old these debts are, and the Statute of Limitations on all of the debts. Calculate if there are any such debts which you may be able to pay without settlement, because debt settlement hurts your credit.

Get the settlement agreements in writing, and then send in your payments through certified mail requesting a return receipt (CMRRR).
