Hi Nelly,
I just got a bill from Afni today for $479 that i supposedly owe to a bank that I have never had an account with. And I checked my credit reports and Afni had looked into my information with TransUnion. Is this even legal? And what info is actually available for them to view? Is there a way to protect my credit while I am disputing validation?
I have no negative marks on my credit report as of yet..does that prove that I do not have this account Afni claims that I have and owe?
thanks!

Yes, collection agencies can pull your credit report from the credit bureaus and check them. It is legal. They can check your credit report for information regarding your employment, address, contact details, etc.

It is a good thing that you don't have negative marks on your credit report. Since you're quite sure that you don't owe the debt, you should ask the collection agency to validate the debt. Your credit score will not be hurt if you ask the collection agency to validate the debt.
