No. Definitely do not pay until you know you owe it. Paying admits you to a debt you may not have and will cause more not less problems in the future.
Instead ask for debt validation while stating what you know. Do not state you REFUSE to pay as even though the amount is a paltry sum of $292, they can legally take you to court if the amount is valid.
My story was that I just received a collection notice for an account that was well over the statute of limitations, closed in person and tainted by theft. After I asked for debt validation stating these key facts they keeled over and dropped the account. (this was from RJM Acquisitions btw). No DV or anything. Just dropped the case.
So send in writing a debt validation (DV) letter. Have it sent via Return receipt certified and keep all the paperwork you have and get. Again do not state you refuse to pay, but that you desire validation of this debt.

Forgot to say that if you do choose to pay scour the web for all and any consequences that will occur from paying. Keep all paperwork of what you owe and be sure that the amount is accurate and does NOT change. Also do be sure to contact the credit report companies themselves.
Best of luck!
