Problems making a settlement

My wife was contacted by Smith Debnam attorneys at lawin N.C.(we also live in N C) about her discover card debt.We contacted them to try and make a settlement but the only way they will settle is with a $1000.00 down that we dont have.When my wife told them what we can afford the tell us they cant work with that.Now the lady she talk to tells my wife she has till the end of the month. In the letter they said they will be proceed to lawsuit.We are are trying to avoid that but we dont have what the are asking for.Need help the end of the month is not far.

Are they collecting on the discover card debt? Have they sent you any thing in writing? If yes, then you will have to pay them as per the settlement agreement. If you diverge from it, then they might sue you.
