How do I get debt collector to give me a settlement letter before they get there money??

Tell them to send you a settlement letter that says If they recieve the payment of XXX dollars by such and such date your account ### is paid in full. When you recieve that letter, sign it, copy it and send it back by certified mail with a check. Make sure it is sent to you with plenty of time to return it with the check.

When you negotiate with the collector to settle your debt, it is always advisable to ask for a written settlement letter. You should not pay a single penny before signing the agreement. Verbal agreements are not legally valid. Moreover, several collection agencies change the terms and conditions of the agreement later later.
