What is the law in regards to a creditor who refuses your monthly payment and sends it back then charges you a late fee?
I ask because the credit card company refused our check sent from our bank & returned it. We were notified by our bank and the credit card company charged us a $39 late fee. After called they removed the fee, but they did the same thing again. Refused payment, charged late fee and again did it for a third time, but would not remove both fees. Now the interest rate has skyrocketed.

Did they send a letter back with it as to why they refused payment? Have they filed a lawsuit against you and that is why they are refusing payment? As for the late fees, that is just an automatic computer thing - no one is manually entering them. But you need to at least call them and ask why they are refusing payments.

thank you,
The payment was sent back to the bank as we had used our online banking service. They have not filed a suit. We were current on our payments and decided to utilize our banking service for our bills We had to go to using their website to pay and they never did to my knowledge explain why they refused our payments. They were the at least the minimum payment, but usually more.
some of the charges were no finance charges and some had interest, but this last statement didn't show any of that and showed lot higher interest rate. We were unable to pull up the past statements on their website and when called they said they would review the account. This is a card used for dental work, Care Credit.
