When I was 18 I met and elloped with a man that turned out to be a nightmare. During our marriage we always had to open bank and utility accounts in my name because it turned out he had TERRIBLE credit, then over the next couple years he would often make us up and move out of state. A couple of accounts went negative and got sent into collections. I have paid one off among many other unpaid bills. Recently I opened a savings account and $350 got debited from it; I called the bank and they transfered me to someone else who said it was debt collected on a bank account from 6 years ago (different bank) that I didn't realize was in collections because I didn't see it on my credit report. So I took the majority of my money out for fear that more would be taken since I am a single mom and live paycheck to paycheck right now. Today I went to cash a check from my insurance company from a accident claim and deposit the min amount to keep my savings in good standing and they told me they couldn't cash it but that they were going to deposit it and after the funds cleared in the AM I could make a withdrawl, when I asked why they had to do it that way they said that because Progressive's check wasnt written on the same bank as I use they had to verify funds. It sounded odd to me that they couldn't just call and verify them, now I am worried that someone else has a levy (or whatever the term is) against the account and they just aren't telling me. Since I didn't even know about the last one I'm really scared of a repeat incident. How likely is this and how can I find out if someone has a judgement against me and the account that I don't know about?

Hi. Holding an insurance check for a few days is common practice and they will do this more often than not. That sucks about your money they debited. It needs to be a lesson to all to watch credit reports and court records for judgments. The banks frequently also have the right to take money from one account you have with them and apply it to an account you owe on. I am leary of the banks while I am in settlements.

I did a little bit more researching and brain crunching after reading your responses and learned that the old account for which the funds were taken was Bank One and my current bank is Chase which merged and thats how they were able to pay off the one account with those funds. I still don't understand why after 6 years it wasn't on my credit report or I would have been working to resolve it like the others; oh well, one more debt down!
