I'd agree with my previous posters in saying that the collectors have to send you a collection letter and that they can't harass you in this regard. It is your right to get informed about the debt amount and the name of the creditor.
Their notice must specify that this debt would be considered to be 'valid' if you don't dispute it within 30 days. Once you're notified, you'll need to check whether it matches the amount that you actually owe. If you don't agree, you may ask for a written verification of the said debt.
