credit report

i have never heard of them, talked to them or received any mail from them. BUT i just discovered a hard inquiry on my credit report, which really ticks me off. I am in the middle of buying a home and this does not help. Isn't what they did against the LAW if they did not notify me in writing first? Not to mention i have no idea what it is for.........
