I just talked to UCB about a charge from 2006 for $220. I asked if they could send me something to verify that these charges are mine since I don't know what they are. They said no. They would not send anything to me and I would have to pay by credit card or check over the phone immediately or they would start to garnish my wages from work. I asked if I could start making payments and they said no. They wanted it in full. I am a single mother and I can't afford to make one single payment. They said fine. We will start the garnishment and they hung up. Can they do that legally? Aren't they supposed to work with people? I am not sure where to go from here. Do I just sit and wait for the garnishment to take place?

Well, to garnish your wage they need to sue you and win a judgement. Also, they need to abide by the state laws since wage garnishment isn't allowed in every state.

You must get the mailing address of this collector to send them a debt validation letter. Take the help of the sample letters from this site to draft one. Please, remember don't pay the collector a dime before you get the debt validated.

You can also search the site about the collector, using its full name, to get its address.
