I had a US Bank account when I was 19-21, I am now 27. A few months ago this comany began calling and told me I was going to be brought to court immediately if I did not pay on my old account. They refused to send me anything by mail and would only send 1 email listing payment dates. The guy acctually was screaming at me on the phone and when I said I needed to speak with US Bank he told they would have no record of the company because the debt had been sold. I reluctantly set up payments. After 2 payments I reqested a letter with an pdated balance and proof of receipt of my payments.. they said they wold only send an email. When I received it, it was the same as the other one they sent. I called US Bank and they told me I own no money and to immediately go to my current bank and close the account they were debiting from. I tried to call the regent asset comapny but the number no longer worked. I went to my bank and they tried another number to reach the company, but that number was out of service. I am going to US Bank to request my old banking records. How do I get the money I paid to Regent Asset back? Is US Bank responisble for not protecting my information?

You can try talking to your current bank and let them know you were scammed. They may be able to reverse the transactions but there's no guarantee. You will definitely need to close that account and open a new one or your money will never be safe again.

As far as US Bank being liable. I don't think you'll be able to prove negligence on their part. You don't know exactly what info these people had before they contacted you or where it came from. Many of these scammers just pick a large bank's name and start fishing. If you'd not responded, they may have called you back 6 months later saying you owed on an old BOA account.

This is exactly why we advise people to never just pay money to a voice on the phone and to never give ANYONE your checking account info. Validate that debt before giving anyone a cent of your money.
