From what I can see, its best to get educated, and deal with things yourself. That means, knowing the laws in your state, what a debt collector can and can not do, the rules for collectors calling you at work etc..

That will go a long long way.

there are a lot of debt negotiators out there, that just prey on people's ignorance, and do not do a damn thing, in fact, make your situation worse.

In IL, the state attorney sued two such companies.. they said that they were attornies and with their experience and power, could negotiate with the heavy hitters, (ie, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and even Advanta, which is known for not settling)

They require you to put money away in escrow, which is really a bank account to pay THEM, for their horrendous fees!!!

I could not beleive what scammers these people were.. They do nothing, that you can not do yourself.

And then, there is the debt management companies, that promise to consolidate your debt lower payments yadda yadda. Well who cares, the marks on your credit are conducive to BANKRUPTCY!!!

Again, you are better negotiating one and one with your creditors... Or, if you do not want to do that, have it go into complete default, and let them screw up the lawsuit if they decide to sue you.

My only advice is to go to the library, read some books on your rights, and take it from there.

Dont expect anyone do to anything for you..
