I rehabbed my defaulted student loans 2 years ago. Everything has been fine (except one small glitch that I have been dealing with concerning a lost Perkins loan. It never transferred and it was reporting on the NSLDB but no one would take ownership of it so I had no one to pay) I received a call from ERS at my job about unpaid tuition. I told them not to call my job again. I do not believe I owe this debt so I gave them my actual cell phone number. I have not gone to the school in over 10 years (2002) I actually worked as coach of one of their teams and got checks from them until I left in 2008. They had my current address and paid me every month during that time and not one time was I informed I had an outstanding balance. Now, 10 years later after we sent a Perkins loan verification I owe $8000 is past tuition. I do not know how I should proceed. It's been a decade. I don't even know where I would begin. I was young and dumb and don't have any of those records. I actually think some of the transactions were cash at the controllers office. For all intents and purposes the SOL has expired, except I did move out of state in 2008. But I have a hard time believing that they would not have contacting me in the 6 years I was an employee of the same University that says I have an outstanding debt that they would have tolled the debt. I do not know if I should call ERS back or if it is worth the money to get a lawyer involved or just send a a SOL/Cease and Desist letter. Any suggestions would be helpful.

So it is tuition you owe?? If this was a state school or private non public there is no SOL. State schools have more power in that they can utilitze tax offsets. How were you permitted to graduate? Have you not needed a copy of your transcripts in all these years? They would be frozen.

I used to work at the University of Minnesota. The financial aid data base was seperate from the schools regular computers. When you leave the school and you have Perkins, you should have updated the financial aid office with your address, not just the school. This is why exit interviews are so important. As to why they didnt contact you, most schools do not have the manpower or budget to be calling and writing. Most students find out when they either need a transcript or the account is sent to colletions.
