Hello all.
I recently have been trying to return to school and I owe my previous school $6962 and change. Without paying them I am not able to get my transcripts and return to school. I have successfully talked them down to $3,400. After reading several forums and articles advising that I should ask them for a letter from the debt collectors stating the agreement that we have made and amount that we have settled on. Well I have asked for the letter and they are telling me they would be able to send me one when the payment clears. The debt collectors are also suggesting that I should send them payment via routing number and bank account. My aunt is lending me the money and I just don't feel safe about it. I don't want the debtors to take more then agreed upon out of her account and I don't want them claiming that this is a down payment instead of a lump sum that would have the account paid in full. The more articles I read they all say to ask for a payment agreement BEFORE I send any money and to send a check by certified mail. What is the best way to go about this? Please help. Should I tell them that my aunt will not send them a dime until they type up a payment agreement? Should I also tell them that she will only pay with a check sent usps via certified mail?

My grandmother and I both spoke with a supervisor who said that they don't type up personalized agreements. This is a settlement of the account and the debt collectors would call it a 'settlement' every time I spoke with them. The original debt was 7k. I offered 3k. They then said "I spoke with the school and the school has agreed to accept $3,395.41." When I asked that they send me something that states the amount that was agreed upon by both parties both the debtor and the supervisor both said they don't do things like that. She said once the payment is made she would make the adjustment and send something out and when the check clears that they would send me a letter from the school that states that the account is 'paid in full.'

Should I ask to speak with another supervisor? Someone higher then the one I spoke with? I don't feel save without something in writing.

Yes this is just past tuition. I live right around the corner from the school so I'm going to call and hopefully they will help me with the situation. I would much rather pay in person then to the debts who are sketchy from what I have experienced.

Opps sorry....missed part of the question. I believe that it is still owed to the school. It has been to 3 different collections agencies. When I spoke with the creditor and asked them "Who owned the Debt" I believe they said the school.
