I talked to Great Lakes about my grandsons student loan. It had been
sold toGC. I talked to them on the phone several times. I have a paper my grandson signed so I could talk to them for him. They say they sent me a paper in May. I did not get it. They want my checking account information so they can take out $77.00 a month for 10 months. I asked if they would send me something in writing since I have only talked to them on the phone. They said they can't and if I don't call them back in 24 hours with the information they will start
the paper work to collect from his job. Can they do this and without any paper record for me?

The loan has NOT been sold to GC services....they are a collection vendor contracted by Great Lakes.

Your grandson should be dealing with this himself. He is never going to learn financial responsiblity with somebody doing it for him. Getting a student loan is not rocket science, but he needs to be an adult and take care of it himself.

The payment arrangement they set up is for rehab. You will not get anything in writing...your grandson has a prom note and they are not permitted to alter the terms of that note by putting anything in writing. Rehab however is a provision in the Higher Education Act.

And yes, they can garnish your grandson's wages without a court order.
