i have been living in south africa for four years and live well below the poverty line, i am moving back to the states in march. is there any way that they will take off the interest for the years i was below the poverty line? i made on average in these four years $600 per month. my original loan was $9000 and is now well over $20,000. i'm not trying to get out of my loan, i am desperately searching for a solution to being able to pay it off. the collection agency has been incredibly rude and at times abusive. calling me unamerican and why i can't get on a boat even as a castaway to come home and pay my debt.

Nope...being below the poverty line qualifies you for nothing. There are many people in the us who are below the poverty line and they do not qualify for any cancellation. On top of that, you have defaulted on your loan. Did you ever apply for deferments or forebearances?? If you were only gone for 4 years, you could have covered it with deferments easily.
