I signed up for a graduate level class at the near by state university. Attended classes for a few weeks, and then dropped the course. I "owed" the university the full tuition for this class (no student loans were used). I am not in a graduate program nor do I require anything more from this university. Thus I decided not to pay the tuition and my case has been forwarded to a collection agency.

What are the consequences of informing the collection agency that I wont pay the tuition (I have the money to pay it in the bank, but dont really want to)? Is a ruined credit history the only consequence, if they decide to sue for the total, would that significantly raise the amount I would likely have to pay? I understand the state could try to withhold my tax refunds to pay the bill (this doesnt really concern me as I make sure not to get any)?

Key word..."state school". Government debt. No SOL. You tell them you wont pay, they will pursue you.

You ever want to buy a house?? Suggest you pay it now. They will get their money....how much you pay is really up to you....you agreed to all court and legal costs and tuition accounts usually charge about 50% in collection fees.
