I consolidated my student loans (including federal loans) through an income contingency program with the government. Under the terms of repayment based on my income my minimum monthly payment was always nothing. If my loans were paid in 25 years the debt would be canceled.

Now out of the blue Allied Interstate is calling me several times at work, called my brother twice, and when I said it was impossible to pay the loan and that I was applying for SSI they claimed I could be denied SSI (I checked with SSA and they can't do this with SSI).

Allied Interstate then asked me to send them my medical records arguing that they could cancel my debt because of illness.

After they lied about the SSI there was no way I was sending them anything.

What can I do to get this collection agency off my back? I told them not to call me at work and they still are.

I told my brother to tell them it's illegal to call relatives about another relative's debt. I don't know if he has gotten any further calls.

You consolidated (FYI...only federal loans can be consolidated under this program)....did you respond any requests or paperwork to renew your income contingent repayment? It has to reset every year based on your income.

If Allied is calling you, somehow you have defaulted on your loans. You are working....your wages can be garnished. If you are successful in getting SSI, it too can be garnished.

There is nothing illegal about them calling your brother.....if they had no other way to reach you prior to calling you, they are permitted to call him for skip trace information. They cannot however disclose the debt.
