I received a notice from a collection agency requesting that I notify them of the validity of a debt that I am disputing with the U.S. Dept of Education. The collection agency gave me 30 days to answer...I have been talking directly with the Dept of Education about the loan and I feel like I shouldnt bother talking with them as they tried to mislead me about my options in dealing with the the debt. The Dept of Education said they while they reviewed my loan discharge application I wouldnt be subject to any collection agency. All things considered...while I wait for my application to be reviewed, do I have anything to worry about? Such as wage garnishment, income tax offset, etc..

As the Department of Education has said that as long as they are reviewing the application, you won't be subject to any collection activity, I think you don't have to worry about anything. The debt collector won't be able to take any actions against you.
