Missing payments from student loan

When I finished college I started paying on student loans, which was under 4,000 but about 3 years into the payment plan they started calling me telling me they were not getting my payments. So I sent them the money orders stubs and canceled checks where I had paid, but they ignored them saying they never got the money but the checking the money orders and the canceled checks it said they did. I showed them this but they still kept demanding I pay the remaining the entire balance of 1,800 in full. I wrote several times telling them and sent the money orders stubs and canceled checks again and again. But they still demanded I pay the remaining amount in full. Which I did not have it so they turned it over to a collection agency and now according to them the amount has exploded in over 14,000. How have they and the collection agency came to that conclusion is beyond my wildest dream. Have anyone else ever experienced this?

Could you have had more than one loan? Have you checked NSLDS for your loan listings? Are these private or federal loans?
FYI...money order stubs are NOT proof of payment.
