I have slm "private"( didn't know about at the time) loans that went into default, and now i deal with allied interstate. I have worked out a payment arragement with them, and they send me a monthly statement saying they are taking out the money for that month. But I have asked numerous times for some type of statement stating what we have agreed upon, and they refuse to give me one. CAn they do that ???

yup....you have a prom note agreeing to balance in full on demand. they will not put anything in writing that infers a payment arrangement. Your payment plan is only temporary and subject to review and revision. This is standard in the student loan industry.
