Question about default situation

My student loan of approximately 230,000 just went into default. I was unable to pay the 1500.00 per month amount that was required and could not get the monthly amount reduced! I received information over the telephone from a rep stating that I could get a deferment until December, but I found out that it was not approved. I did not receive anything in the mail....but found out when I called back to check. By that time by loan had entered default. I was told that I could send in hardship forbearance paperwork before the 30 days that they send the the paperwork to the loan guarantor.....but what will happen if the hardship forbearance is not approved?:confused:
