this will be the first time ive ever had to pay in taxes,,does the IRS have a payment plan?

How much you owe is a big part of it. Also important are the circumstances and how you approach it.

Ferinstance, if you're just looking to pay installments on your 2007 tax liability, they'd likely accommodate you with nary a raised eyebrow. You'll have to pay interest, 6% IIRC, but otherwise no big deal. Back taxes from years ago that were dodged, etc., that'd be a whole different story.

Your attitude could affect things as well. Be polite, straightdorward, and businesslike, and you'll eliminate problems before they start. You don't have to take any crap or approach them as a supplicant, but don't antagonize the IRS workers.

We had payment plans with the IRS also. Due to going through some rough times, we eventually set things up to come out my husband's paycheck. They set it up as a garnishement, but once we got use the money not being there, it was ok. We never saw it and the IRS got their money.

Besides the interest, they also charged us a penelty every month.
