Tips for Tax Filers on Economic Stimulus Payments

Great Information! Thanks. Hey, WULF, I went to the IRS web, to see if I quailfy. According to it, it states, " I probably would qualify for at least $300.00." i wasn't sure HOW to answer some of the questions, though. I DID file for 'Head of Household'..however..I filed for EIC, for my son and his dad filed for 'Child Exemptions.' Any advice?

Sounds like you'll at least get the $300. Beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. For that matter, it beats a poke in the eye with a dull stick, too...
I think you may be hosed on the extra $300 for your son, though. I was just looking at the calculator, and it asks for the "number of qualifying children for whom you entered a valid Social Security Number...". What they're driving at here, IMHO, is whether or not you claimed your son as a dependent in 2007. That seems to be the determining factor for who gets the stimulus payment for him, you, or your ex. Now, there is some additional drivel on the calculator page about IRS Form 8901: Information on Qualifying Children Who Are Not Dependents. Did you file Form 8901 in 2007?
Here's a link to the form: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8901.pdf
I thought the questions in their SP calculator were pretty straightforward. Did you have a copy of your return handy when you used the calculator?

WULF......I was looking at my Tax Return, when I went to the IRS site. I DO have a 'Qualifying Child'. What I did was ( when I filed for taxes..) was I signed a form ( don't remember the Form #) that 'waived my right to file Child Tax Exemptions, for my Qualifing Child' (basically..) but,..I DID file EIC for my son. My ex filed Child Exemtiions. I filed EIC. Also..I wonder ( if you know..) shouldn't I have gotten a letter, from the IRS, stating how much I quailfy for? I did recieve a 'general' one, but, I don't think i recieved a 'specific' one. Thanks for your assistance.

You might oughtta spend some quality time reading IRS Publication 501 on exemptions and such. Seems like if you can qualify to file as Head of Household, and your son lives with you, you oughtta be entitled to the additional $300 SP. I could be wrong, but I think this may merit a call to the IRS to clarify things. [Be sure to let me know what they say, if you call.] Remember, I'm not an attorney or an accountant. Just an old biker with a bad attitude.
On the letters... I got the general one. I didn't know there was a specific one.

I'm gonna call the IRS this week, BTW..according to the IRS website, people should be getting letters...a 'general' one ( telling people about the rebate) and a 'specific' one ( telling people how much they will acyually get). I let you know about my conversasion, with the IRS.
