This b**ch *****Melinda Richardson******* called me literally 5 minutes ago and asked for my sister who moved from jacksonville 3 years ago. We are both now in N.Y. Anyhow she ask's for me calling my full government name and so like anyone else I asked who's speaking. So she gives me her name and I ask from where or what company. She then gives a little giggle and says to me " you askin a whole lotta questions not to be K.K. dont worry I'm not a bill collector and she hangs up the phone. So I call my sis to find out if she knows who these people are and of course she has no idea. So I googled the company and it brought me to this page. So we call back together on three way cause now I'm pissed. The same Ms Richardson answers the phone and I said to her that was very rude of you to call my house like that and then hang up on me. She starts yelling and saying that she is not in the buisness of customer service and hangs up again. Now I'm LIVID. So I'm reading somemore of this page and I decide to call back and request that they take my # of their list because they are very rude and unprofessional and I give the lady whom I'm speaking to the name of the woman (MELINDA RICHARDSON)who called me and she ask's for my phone #. I give it to her and she says that my # is not in her system. So I tell her it must be if your co-worker just called me. I also tell her that I pulled you company up on the web and I know about all your tactics. I also inform her that the call is being recorded and I am requesting that I never receive a call from this company again or you will have hell to pay. Then she starts yelling to the top of her lungs. And I hang up the phone.
Do you know this b**ch called my house back 4 more times while I am typing this. But I didn't answer and they left no messages. I'm not even the one that they are looking for, and how did they get my #. I have never lived in Jacksonville. They done messed with the wrong 1.
And thak you guys for all the info.

I just spoke with United Legal last night. I was really nervous assuming that they were going to make threats but I got them before they could. So anyway they were calling because I defaulted on a payday loan with Rio Resources (Tendollarpayday.com). When I answered the phone the guy went on to do his mini miranda and what not and informed me that the call was being recorded. As soon as he finished I told him that I was also recording the call and of course there was a long pause and he said o.k. I just told him how it was. I informed him that I am working with Auriton Solutions to consolidate all my debt and offered him the phone number which he gladly took (which surprised me). He then asked if this debt was put onto their program and I said yes and that was the end of it.
I think I surprised him by telling him that I also am recording the call.

I have started receiving phone calls from this company. They do not identify themselves or what the nature of their business is. Ask for you like they know you and then refuse to tell you their last names or what company they are with, only found out by running a reverse lookup on the net.

Hi Jackie,
Who was the original loan with? Your husband will need to send them a cease and desist letter stating not to contact him or his supervisors. Keep everything documented when talking to them or any mail correspondence. Also make them validate the debt.

I have been receiving threatening calls also. I'm in training for a new position and can't be disturbed at work. I have called them back and left messages. I know they are busy, but they also give specific directions on how to repay the loan, even though I will have to get money orders and send to them. They acted like that was not acceptable. Do they accept payments with money orders? Does anyone else know? Thanks.

Collectors hate the mail. They will pressure you for payments via western union/money gram, credit cards, and checks over the phone. Most collection agencies stress the balance in full immediately, so they will lead you to believe that you can't pay with money orders or checks.
You can send them a letter stating that they are only permitted to contact you through the mail. Make sure you send this letter return receipt. They will be violating the law if they continue to call after receiving the letter. If that happens, you can file complaints with your attorney general, FTC and/or retain a lawyer to sue them for damages.

This company has been harrassing me for months now saying that they will soon go after my family if I do not agree to pay the outrageous amount that they are requiring, of which I did not borrow! They have called my work several time where my office mate answered and the man, "Mr. Porter" was very rude to her demanding that he speak to me, when she told him that I was out of the office he called her a liar. She asked to speak to his supervisor and he hung up on her. Now he called me again this evening, at 8:00pm saying that he doesn't understand why I am being to difficult. And if I didn't call him by 8:30pm it would be out of his hands and nothing he could do about it. I have had similar harrassing calls from another agency, United Pay Services, where a man with a very thick Indian accent has called threatening me by saying he would send officers to my house to pick me up...I'm still here...and then proceeded to ask me what I looked like, if I was fat or thin. I of course hung up on him, two weeks later he called back saying that since I am not cooperating that it is now in 'God's' hands as to what will happen to me.
I plan on filing compliants on both companies!!

Yes file complaints and tell these companies you are filing complaints! Do not let them intimidate you! You will not go to jail over this nor can they threaten this....The more complaints on these companies the better chance we have of getting them shut down so they cannot scam anymore hard working people!!!!!

Not to play Devil's Advocate here... BUT...
I know the co-owners of ULC personally, and they are not the evil conspirators that everyone here is making them out to be. They are simply trying to run a collection business. To my knowledge, they run a pretty tight & by-the-books operation. They judge their employees by the number of accounts they can close, so I imagine that some employees can be a little pushy so they can meet their performance goals.
As for being rude, you would not believe some of the stories that I have heard. These collection agents are constantly yelled at, berated, and verbally abused by people who didn't and don't want to pay their bills. So think about that when you are talking to one of these reps the next time.
Also, the reason that they don't believe you when you tell them that you don't owe them money is that EVERYONE lies to them. That is also why they prefer a credit card to a "checks in the mail" payment.
I had a similar situation where we got a new phone number that was previously owned by someone who (must have) had awful credit, because we were constantly getting collection calls for people we didn't even know. I asked them (the owners of ULC) for advice, and they told me exactly what was told in the post... Send a Cease and Desist letter to the company. Guess what-- It worked. Phone calls stopped, end of story.
I have NEVER seen/heard any indication that they are trying to "make up" bills. I don't know the particulars of the cases posted here, but- Have you ruled out identity theft? If someone steals your info and opens an account, then the debt collectors are going to call YOU about it... Also, they only collect on the debts that they are told about, so if the original company makes a mistake, they are going to act on that mistake as well. They don't have the resources to validate every account that goes through the company.
I realize that I am preaching to the choir here, since this is a forum for people who have problems with debt collectors, but I thought I would try to give my friend's point of view on the subject...
Just a small comment to Devil's words. You state they don't have
Just a small comment to Devil's words. You state they don't have the resources to validate every account.Well tough luck bub.It is a consumers right under Federal law to have debt validated. If they cannot validate,I see no point in giving them a dime.If they collect when validation demand has been issued, they better be ready to dig in their limited resources to pay for lawsuits.Your other comments are understandable and valid in certain situations.

I wanted to thank everyone on this forum. United Legal has been seriously harrassing my wife.
They call her every morning at 8 am and SCREAM into the phone...PAY YOUR BILL, PAY YOUR BILL, PAY YOUR BILL. We don't even know what bill they are talking about! They won't send us any info in the mail; will only take phone payments...and now they are threatening to call her relatives.
I just sent them the cease & desist.
Thank you for the advice! These are bad, bad people!

i just got contacted from this guy, "officer jeff" from united legal headquarters (looks like they changed the last part of their name). at first, i told him i filed bankruptcy in 2005, and this payday loan was from 2004. he said that bankruptcy doesn't make a difference and i still have to pay. i said no, and that i wanted it in writing. then he said "pay $200 and i'll send you something in writing". i was like... "WHAT!!!! no i want it in writing now." then i gave him my bankruptcy case # and he said ok, and hung up. so, i called him back and asked him if he hung up on me or is this case closed? he said i still have to pay. i couldn't believe this guy!!! i said no again, and i'm going to report their company to the FTC and BBB, etc. Then, he said "don't waste our time" and hung up on me again. so, i called back again and got a lady, and i said i wanted to speak to your supervisor, she acted like she didn't hear me, and gave the phone to jeff again. then, he hung up on me again. then, i called again. and automatic hang up. i couldn't believe it. these people are so unprofessional. i don't know, but i want to report them. i can't let this go on, knowing that they can do this to people. it's not right....

Alleged Debt Scam Calls Threaten Consumers: 'Only God Can Help You Now'

RSS Scammers masquerading as debt collectors and law enforcement officials have terrified consumers with threatening phone calls and bilked them out of thousands of dollars, officials with the West Virginia Attorney General's Office say.
Law enforcement officials in West Virginia say they're struggling to track down alleged scammers who use repeated phone calls, threats and fake names to try to swindle consumers out of thousands in supposed debt repayments.
(ABC News Photo Illustration)Prosecutors said that the scammers, who speak with heavy foreign accents, are known for repeatedly calling people at home and at work and threatening them with arrest if they don't repay supposed debts -- debts that, according to West Virginia officials, don't actually exist.
The scammers operate under names such as U.S. National Bank, Federal Investigation Bureau and United Legal Processing, said West Virginia Assistant Attorney General Norman Googel.
The callers also have invoked the names of actors Denzel Washington and Steve Martin, people who've received calls tell ABCNews.com.
Googel said that the scammers have been impossible to track down, but ABCNews.com spoke to one man who claimed to be associated with U.S. National Bank. The man said he works for Financial Crime Division, a company he said provides services for USNB.
The man refused to give his name and gave little information about his company.

Has anyone spoke to a Austin Smith or David Marshall from United Legal? I'm not sure if it's the same company people are writng about, but the phone numbers I have gotten can be cross referenced to FL., VA, and PA. I live in TX. Can this be the same people? They harass me all day at work, every day, despite me telling them not to call.
You must send them a C&D letter to make them stop calling.

"It's not necessary that each and everyone knows about Financial Crime Division, and probably one of them is you," he said. (To hear an excerpt of this interview, click here. Links to more interview excerpts are included on the second and third pages of this story.)
But Mark Feury, a 35-year-old assistant manager at a hotel cafe, said it was the threat of an arrest that drove him to wire nearly $800 to U.S. National Bank in January. The Lewisberg, W.Va., resident said that he took out several payday loans -- short-term loans -- in 2005 to help pay for Christmas presents and medical treatments for his son, who suffers from autism.
Feury said he paid his loans back in 2007, but the scammers' phone calls -- at least 35 in all, he said -- and their threats made him doubt himself.
"I was scared to death," he said. "Everything they said literally just stressed me out to the max."
The group has targeted consumers who took out payday loans through Web sites years ago, Googel said.
The group has secured consumers' Social Security numbers and other personal information, which may have been stolen from Internet payday lending sites, Googel said.
What has made the group especially intimidating, Googel said, is its use of phrases that sound like legal terms -- such as "downloading affidavits" -- but, in reality, are meaningless.
The alleged scammers have also invoked God, Googel said, telling victims that "only God can help you now."
Some of the scammers' tactics are downright puzzling.
One West Virginia woman, who asked that her name not be revealed, told ABCNews.com that a scammer once called her and identified himself as "Denzel Washington."
Feury said that one of the scammers who called him said he was calling from "Steve Martin's office."
Googel said that the scammers' use of celebrity names may indicate a lack of familiarity with American names. Some, he said, suspect that the scammers are based in India.
Since July 2007, Googel said, the West Virginia Attorney General's Office has heard from nearly 20 consumers who have complained about the scam.
West Virginia residents aren't the only ones complaining. The Florida Attorney General's Office said it has heard more than three dozen complaints related to U.S. National Bank.
"The way they've hidden themselves is pretty slick," he said.
ABCNews.com called a phone number associated with U.S. National Bank -- Feury listed the number in a complaint against the company -- and was transferred to the man who claimed to work for Financial Crime Division.
The man, who spoke to an ABC News reporter for about five minutes, said that U.S. National Bank owns Internet payday lending Web sites and that Financial Crime Division is a "legal affidavit processor" -- a term that Googel also has dismissed as meaningless -- that works to notify borrowers that they still owe money to USNB. (The man refused to provide ABC News with contact information for U.S. National Bank.)
"They have taken so many loans they have forgotten that one to pay back and we are calling them about this legal matter," the man on the phone said. "That's not our problem that they have forgotten."
The man argued against the complaint that his company had called people about nonexistent or repaid debts. Consumers, he said, have failed to provide the company with proof that their debts have been repaid.
"When we are asking the information, they are not ready to give to us," he said. "If they have paid it, they must have something in writing, some kind of receipt, but they are not going to give it to us, so how can we trust them?"
When asked where Financial Crime Division was based, the man hung up.
Googel said that he has been on the phone with the suspected scammers many times and that each time they refuse to provide identifying information such as valid addresses or a licensing number, which collections agencies operating in West Virginia are required to have.
"I yell and scream at them, but it doesn't do any good. It's sort of high drama in a way," he said.
Googel said that he has notified the Federal Trade Commission about the scam, but the FTC would not confirm whether it had launched an investigation. An FTC official told ABCNews.com that it does not disclose whether it is investigating a company unless it takes the company to court.
The official said that consumers with complaints about U.S. National Bank are encouraged to contact the FTC, the Better Business Bureau or their state attorney general's office. Read a statement by the West Virginia Attorney General's Office's office on the issue here.

Ignore any and all calls from United Legal - they are scammers and cannot do anything to you despite all their threats to the contrary. I like to ask them what court the alleged case was filed in, when it was filed, and when I can expect to be served as I am sitting on my porch right now waiting for the summons and complaint. Nobody ever shows up.
