Hi all,

I am on a roll tonight, you are all going to wake up and log on and freak out at all my questions! LOL!

My new question is: in the "personal information" section of my experian credit report, there are 8 names listed there that are similar to mine. Some of them are incorrect though. There is also a variation on my social security number, and under spouse's name, it lists my ex-boyfriend, whom I was never married to. Is it possible to dispute these items, and if so, how do I go about it? Also, how do I find out which account is using the variation on my social security number? Is there a way to do that? Thanks again everybody!

~Mary :)

Mary,

The term ???update' seems suitable here. Credit bureaus allow consumers to update their personal information whenever it is outdated. So please send them mail informing the items that want to change.

You can also call them to know if they prefer any particular format of letter. Otherwise you can select the sample letter offered by this site and edit it as per your requirement. Also send your letter through certified mail with return receipt requested. Here also they should respond to your query within 30 days. Keep us posted if you find any new information.

You can include a copy of the driver's license, LES statement, or phone bill to make corrections on the personal information and get those removed that are not required.

Some helpful tips for all when disputing with a credit bureau:

  • Put your dispute in writing.
  • Use a separate letter to dispute each item.
  • Include your name, address, and SSN# for verification purpose.
  • Letters should be sent through certified mail with return receipt requested.
  • Keep a copy of the letters you send. Several demand letters may be necessary.
  • Whenever the credit bureau marks any particular item ???disputed' it should be shown accordingly in your file.
  • If you have any information to make your point valid, send copies of it.
  • After an item has been corrected in your file, you can request the bureau to send the corrected information to those who pulled your report in the last six months.

What happens when you can't afford to put everything in seperate certified letters. I'd have to send at least 20 letters and thats just to ONE agency!!! I guess I worry too much because we got our house with no problem. They laughed off the collection on my account when I showed them my documentation but it irks me to no end these people can falsify information and not let you correct it!!!

Muffinhomer,

If you cannot afford the cost of sending correspondences, try to dispute online. It's simple and effective. You can check the link below for more assistance on online disputing-

Credit bureaus also allow consumers to place dispute over phone. You can try it if possible.

Once bureaus receive your request, they run an investigation by their own. If they find any discrepancy, they rectify it readily. No one can ruin your credit file purposefully, you have FCRA with you. Best of luck.
