Work study program is a nice system provided by Federal Govt. to help students pay their schooling expenses. Students receive two types of benefits from work-study program –
  • They manage some bucks per month to pay their tuition fees
  • Gain some work experience
The job that is offered to the students generally matches their course of study to the highest extent possible. There is a minimum wage fixed for work study program. An applicant of work-study should at least receive that amount, though they can get more depending upon their financial level, fund available etc.

Students can be assigned with either of on-campus or off-campus jobs. In case of on-campus job, students serve their schools. In case of off-campus jobs, the employer could be private non-profit company or a public organization.

Before allotting the job, students' course of study, class schedules all are considered and they are allowed to work for a particular time span on per day basis. Usually an undergraduate student receives payments by hour and a graduate student can be paid by hour or can receive a salary as well.

Once a student is assigned a job, he should maintain the hours of working allotted for him. By no way the income should cross the total work study award. Moreover, students' academic progress is checked frequently just to ensure that the work does not hamper his education.

Sophia,

Federal Work Study is awarded on basis of need, so you have to fill out the FAFSA as usual and it is granted with the initial financial package that you receive.

If you don't receive FWS award with the first fund approval, you have to file your application to the financial advisor and he will put you on the waiting list. You will get the offer when your turn comes according to the queue.

These issues depend upon schools or universities that you are intended to apply. So consult your financial advisor regarding this topic also.
