I was sent a letter from asset acceptance llc (sent Nov 14) stating I owe over $800 that I know nothing about. I sent them a letter requesting verification and what I received (Dec. 3) was a page listing the original creditor and acct. #, principal bal., interest amt., total bal., my address, a phone number I have never had and the last four digits of a social security number which is not mine. Now obviously they've got the wrong guy, but will they screw up my credit and keep hounding me? So far this has not shown up on my credit report. What's my next move? I'm worried about the 30 days the original letter said I had to dispute the validity of the debt.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Kyle,

You have 30 days to dispute this debt as they have listed the wrong phone number and the wrong social security number with your name.

Asset Acceptance should not report anything to the bureaus especially after you have disputed the debt. If they try to report anything that is not legitimate, it will result in violation of the FCRA laws and you should consult your attorney in this matter.

When you are disputing the debt, send it in writing through certified mail with return receipt requested. You will have sufficient proof of this dispute and will be able to defend yourself if the matter is taken to the court.
