Question 18: How would you benefit from the Credit Card Act?
Since the President has signed the Credit Card bill into law to help the distressed American consumers, there have been a lot of discussions going on about the effects of these changes on American economy. But we are interested to know how you think you could benefit from it. Come and share with us how you feel this law is going to help you.

Answer 1: I was very glad to finally see the government putting some pressure on the credit card companies.
However, I recently received a letter from my credit card company that as of May 1, 2010 they will be raising my interest rate to 23.99%. If I do not want to pay the higher percentage, I can close the account and pay it off at a much lower interest rate.
It saddens me that the credit card companies have apparently found a way around the new restrictions on them, but in essence they have done me a favor.
I chose not to pay the higher interest rate and have entered into an agreement with them to pay off the card. Getting rid of the credit card will help me financially and if I dont have cash for something, I will just learn to do without.
The new credit card law has helped me in an indirect way-and Im greatful to be lowering my debt.

Answer 2: The Credit Card Act will protect consumers in several ways. However, I have read our own Government,, the people who voted for this important reform, are delaying implemantation for 6 months! Creit Card company Lobbyists must be very powerful!
Whenever the new law takes effect, it will force credit card companies to stop their unfair rate increases and deceptive fees. Agreements will also have to be written in plain language the consumer can understand.
Your credit card company will be required to provide at least 21 days from the time they mail the bill until the due date. They will no longer be allowed to make the due date on a weekend, a time when payments are not processed. This has been a deceptive practice causing huge numbers of card holders to pay late fees. Due dates also cant include middle of the day deadlines. Your credit card company will not be able to change the due date every month either.
Another very important part of the new law will protect you from "Over your limit" fees. Credit card companies will not be allowed to approve a transaction that puts you over your limit unless you opt in to allow them to do it. This will protect you from those surprise fees on your statement when you had no idea you went over your limit.
These are the major protections. In addition, if your rate was raised because of a slow pay or missed payment some time ago, but your payments have been on time since, you also have the right to request a rate reduction. With laws to back you up, you might be surprised by how readily they say yes!

Answer 1: I have new priorites, and thats been the best thing that has come out of my overwhelming amount of debt. First, I will repay all of my non-mortgage debt ($25k to go). Once thats done, Id like to begin saving in earnest for my childrens education. A rebate check will help with those goals, but Im convinced I can get there regardless, with a little hard work and perseverance.

Answer 2: I divorced last summer and moved from Minnesota to Florida. My refund got me into my new apartment and I paid my rent ahead 2 months. Being very frugal, I furnished my new apartment for under $300. My daughter knows my budgetting ways and really doesnt complain too much…she is good about saving money. However she will be getting a brand new bike this weekend for her birthday. There are lots of things I wanted to get with the money but I stuck with everything I needed.

Answer 3: Hopefully I will get a tax rebate check. This is the first I have heard of it.
I am not sure how I would spend it if I were to get it. I would probably tuck it away for a rainy day. Or for next year when I will probably have to pay Uncle Sam back for it…… LOL! nothing is free from the Government.!

Answer 4: I am going to spend mine on a fence and catching up on bills. If there is any funds leftover, I really want to buy exercise equipment so that I can get healthy. Plus, I would love to fix my teeth, years of being poor and homeless have caused my teeth to be disgusting to the point that I hate going into public, I cry a lot because of it.

Answer 5: My husband and I spent a lot of time discussing this very topic just before we got our return. We wanted to have a plan before actually getting the money since it is so easy to " Live like the rich when you have a pocket full of money!" I mean, who doesnt want a new big screen TV and a trip to Hawaii!! Without a plan, I was afraid we would overspend on unnecessary things before sitting down together and looking at past due bills or things collecting dust on our credit reports. I knew we would get enough to at least pay all of our immediate bills and past due bills. So that was #1. We have been talking about buying a house since we met over 5 years ago, but never had good enough credit. So paying some of the more recent things on our credit reports was #2. ( I say more recent things because you NEVER want to start with the oldest. Either they are nearing the "7 year drop off" or they have gone dormant and any "new activity" will pull down your score. Its like waking a sleeping giant. Thats a no no. ) Then finally, if there was anything left, we would do some shopping for unnecessary "fun stuff", because even though it isnt stuff we need, sometimes it lifts the spirits to splurge just a little. Plus, after completing numbers 1 and 2, I think we earned it
So when we got our number from the IRS, it was far more than we expected which was great. We had this great plan, and we stuck to it. We payed all of our immediate and past due bills. Then we went to our credit reports, and not only took care of some stuff, we also found some things that didnt seem quite right. We decided to dispute them and they were deemed inaccurate and removed from our reports! BONUS!! We bought a new TV and a Wii (you know, for the spirits
and when we were done, we had money left. Instead of spending it, we agreed to pay our bills ahead one month so we had a great fresh start for the year.
Every year before, we get our money and go crazy at the stores and buy all kinds of stuff. A few weeks later, we would be the same two people with a bunch of new stuff and a pile of bills on the desk, and, you guessed it, no more money. This time, I have to say, feels fantastic to be one step ahead of the game

Answer 6: I have already paid off 50% of my debt. Well, we all know that, paying off debts earlier is always better & if we procrastinate to pay off it they will charge late fees & highest interest rates & it’s going more difficult to pay off them .this year I planned to spend my tax rebate check to pay off my credit card debt. This check will help me to pay off my some bills & other types of debts. I would like to be thankful government to mail me Tax Rebate check of this year.

Answer 7: simply put, im not. year after year i have noticed a vicious pattern with my husband an i that we can never get out of. something breaks an we have to fix it we use a card. then we use every last dollar we have to pay off the card an we never ever get ahead. cause about the time we pay off the card something new happens that causes us to use the card again an never getting anything saved. never getting ahead.
so as much as those few cards with balances on them are making me nuts, i refuse to spend a dollar of my refund on paying them off. im committed to save this year no matter what. i picked up a few cleaning jobs were that will all go into savings an add to the balance every week, as i continue to slowly pay off the balances of those cards.
this year i actually got a pretty decent amount an plan on stashing it away an building a nice nest egg incase of emergencies, job loss, or illness. all my other plans have been failed attempts to relieve ourselves from the debt we owe by borrowing an paying borrowing an paying. hopefully this plan works!

Answer 8: rebate money most likely would go to the biggest debt I owe. My mother always said One drop at a time will eventually fill the barrel" In order to get rid of bad credit, the best to do is help pay them off with rebate money instead of spending on something you dont really need when your financially strapped.

It would have been nice if I had used some for a vacation or something fun like that, but if I am honest with myself I know that the benefit of not having those 3 payments anymore are much more worth it!!!!

Answer 1: My 2010 Financial Resolution is to payoff my PDLs first, by paying them off one at a time during the next 6 months. After that Ill have enough money to make larger monthly payments to my credit cards and medical bills. I have already put together a 6-month budget plan and opened up a savings account. The savings account is for bank overdraft protection which was one of my big problems. The cost will go from $33 each occurrence to $4. My budget plan is situated at my desk, next to my computer so that I see it every day.

Answer 2: My 2010 financial resolution is to bascially pay everything off my credit that is in the negative, or at least pay something on it. I want to do this because, this time around 2011 I plan on buyin me a house. This is something I should have already started doing, a house should not have to be my reason to want to get my credit back in good standing. My mistake but good credit is something you need to make it in this world today.

Answer 3: My financial resolution is to finally be debt free or close to it. And be able to concentrate on my school work, instead on how Im going to pay my next credit card bill. I want to finally be able to say that Im a financially responsible individual. Debt has taken a great toll on my life. I suffer from depression and the extra stress that comes with debt and trying to make payments, hasnt made my life any better the past couple of months. I hope I can achieve this and graduate college debt free, so I dont have to worry about anything but the student loans I will need to pay when I graduate in 2012…

Answer 5: My financial resolution for 2010 is resolve all of my credit card debt. For twenty years, I have always relied on credit cards believing that it was fine to get it now and pay later. Little did I realize that I would still be paying on things that I purchased 10 years ago that I dont even own anymore! Even though we are still carrying a large debt, I feel hope and optimism as I look forward to becoming debt free.

Answer 6: I just graduated from college and up to now I still dont have a job. Before I was thinking that looking for a job was easy but it turns out not but I wont stop looking until I have one. Most of the time I ask money from my mom, but recently I stop asking money from her because I got shy, at this moment I feel how hard it is not having your own income, I cant able to go to the town because I dont have money even a single bucks nor buy something to eat. It seems like I cant move because I dont have money, I always caught myself recalling my past when I was still in college, I was very careless when it comes to money, if I receive my allowance, I spend it without thinking of saving,so now I regret it, my ATM runs out of money. So I decided to start saving every single bucks I have in my cabinet and I stop buying things which is not necessary, I control myself on buying foods and just be contented on a 3 times a day meal. Then I plan to go to other place to apply for a job, hopefully I will be hired because i dont know what to do if it keeps going like this.

50.00 would sure buy me four packs of cigarettes but I have been trying so hard to stop smoking. Thats out.
C) Now using it for some of my eating places like Chilis , Texas Longhorn, Ruby Tuesdays and yes KFC sounds really great!!
But if I win , and because its winter here, I will donate to a Food Bank for the homeless. There has been to many hard times for people today that lost their jobs, homes, etc.
Even though I live week to week like a lot of others, I am very thankful for having a job and good health!!!

Answer 3: Head for the grocery store and treat myself to a good meal. I have a very limited grocery budget and its a very rare treat to enjoy a good cut of meat or seafood. Of course I will need the trimmings to go along with the entree that I would not normally buy-asparagus if I can find it, a spinach salad mix, some ODouls (I dont drink at all because of my history of family alcoholism AND cost of beer/liquor-so this is a REAL treat too) Last a nice pie or cheesecake. Would be like the Christmas I didnt have because I couldnt afford one.

Answer 4: as most of you know about 5 years ago i got into some trouble and went through a settlement program. but scince then i found myself venturing back to the old credit cards for a few big purchases like my furnace blew up and my roof needed replaced.
Of course i wasnt able to save enough money in the little amount of time that i managed to be out of the program so im back to around 5,000 worth of credit card debt. kinda stinks scince i swore i would never use them again but it seems like a never ending vicious cycle with us that something big goes that we cant afford to pay for and we end up having to use the cards. lucky for me i did have some saved that went towards these purchases but now im back to no savings so i have officially made it my mission in 2010 to get everything in order and get both money saved and my 5,000 paid off.
so, what i would plan to do is the 50.00 and whatever other money i make on the net and the money i make cleaning houses is untouchable kept in my paypal account or savings (have to go into the bank to get it) were its not easily reached. and the money my husband makes all goes to bills working one down at a time. so 50.00 would be a great place to start my little nest egg!!

Answer 5: I owe money to a relative who is living on a very limited income. I realize that $50.00 is a long way from what I owe her, but I have been doing my best to pay off this debt in small increments. She welcomes each payment she receives, no matter how small it may be. Therefore, I would definitely use this money to pay down my debt to her!

Answer 6: Throughout my years as a single parent I always prevailed on St. Jude to guide me. Whether it be the rehabilitation of my youngest daughter from an auto accident, dealing with her bipolar illness, and after marrying, my husbands leukemia. Last year it was my oldest daughters mental breakdown. Through each crisis I asked St. Jude to guide me. As I found a resolution, or strength for each situation, I donated to a local charity that helps people in my community, or to a needy family at Christmas – in the name of St. Jude.
As I searched for a resolution to my personal financial crisis (pay day loans and credit card debt), I asked St. Jude for help. I found this website and the rest is history. Should I win this months QOM, I will make a donation in honor of St. Jude to one of the organizations who are aiding Haiti.

Answer 7: If I was to win anything whether it be a dollar or 50 dollars, I would have a few options on how to spend that money.
First I would consider just how much I really would like to buy something for myself, (like some nice relaxing lotion or body product, or even new bra, but since I make sure everyone is taking care of first including bills, before even consider I buying for myself) but then reality sits in and I know that I would either use it to put toward what I might have for groceries since I have 2 growning boys who literally eat me out of house and home, or use it toward gas, cause with gas creeping up to almost 3.00 bucks a gallon, I may need gas to get to work that week. So really, there are alot of things I would use it for.
I really doubt I will win, but atleast I got to take a second from work to type something other than a "please excuse my debt letter" LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Answer Posted by |lorim1971
Answer 8: I would like to just spend it without a thought.
Buy all the good foods i love…and share it with
my best friend….delores…who always looked out
for me when i was down. Well, there is not too much you can do with $50
i could use it to sponsor someone into my business
that they could otherwise not afford to do at all.
Or simply order two of juniors of brooklyn
vanilla with fresh strawberry on top cheese cakes…
Heaven….

Answer 9: I know that $50 is not much money, but to a 16yr old young lady (my daughter Samantha) who will be starting college this fall it is alot. Samantha will be attending the College of the Ozarks. It is a student run school where she will remain debt free for 4 yrs of school and graduate with all she needs to enroll into vet school of her choosing. At this wonderful school she will be working for the school 15 hrs a week and that will pay for her tuition. The only thing she has to cover for her first year is room and board of $4,300.00. Next year she will be allowed to work during the summer months and that will cover her next years room and board. So she is going to school and working parttime now to save as much as possible to go towards her room and board for this fall. What will I do with this money? Of course give it to my daughter to put in savings to help her achieve her goal for this fall.

Answer 1: When it was first suggested to me that I just got rid of all my credit cards and my debit card, I thought thats nuts. Id be free of debt and it would fix my credit but Id have no spending power. I would have to tackle this and even worse I would have to actually start paying them off. So In the hopes really of only trying to prove this was impossible, I began what became one of the smartest moves I ever made. I cut up every card! Ouch. All the store cards too. At that moment I was feeling a bit sick but as I called each lender to say I was closing each card and then ask them to set up payment plans, I felt empowered. (note here that the companies try to persuade you with tempting offers to keep your business when you want to close your card, but be strong!) I was shocked when I had a similar feeling to the feeling of the spending power but it was alot more rewarding, suprisingly. Depending on what you can pay will depend on the legnth of time it will take to get to a zero balance, but stick with it. the smaller the balance the happier I was and It was a challange. The debit card was hard. This was the last hold out for me but this is how you do it. At the beginning of each week If you restrict yourself to only taking out from the bank a certain amount of money and only spend that each week, then you dont need the card anymore Theres no temptation to overspend what you dont have. I was shocked at how fast all this helped improve my credit and I am debt free and so happy today. If I can do this, anyone can!

Answer 2: This is not a way of saving money for a long term but, when walmart quit thier layaway program i was kinda at a loss as to how to purchase christmas presents without using a credit card and scince walmart is usually were i shop for christmas i got the idea when i recieved a gift card for christmas that year for 50.00.
my problem with christmas clubs and sort is that sometimes i would get into a really bad jam and couldnt access it or wouldnt add money to it. so i took that gift card and everytime i went to the store i added 5 or 10 dollars to it every week. Now on the real hard weeks i would miss here and there but for the most part i did commit to it and by black friday i managed to save 300.00
I honestly HATE black friday shopping but when it comes to getting the best deals that 300.00 goes a long way when you can get child size pjs for 3.00 and adults for 8.00 i think. i stuck with what was door buster prices as gifts and still had some money left on my card to buy some groceries.

Answer 3: Well the first one for me was to get my payday loans paid off!!! That was a GREAT feeling
But now I have saved my daughter $3030.00 on car repairs. She was having problems with her car and was told it would cost her $4000.00 to fix it. Not like she would be able to pay that kind of money, because she is laid off right now. So I called the guys that fised hubbys truck and asked if they would be able to look at her car for us. They did, free!!! Then they figured out what was wrong and told me they would only charge us for parts, seeing as she is not working right now and needs a good dependable car. So the cost of fixing her car is only $70.00. I almost cried. These are good guys (young guys) and who says the youth today only thinks of themselves? We ended up paying the bill for her, seeing as her unemployment checks dont go that far. Another money saving move we made, was facing the crazy shoppers the day after Thanksgiving. I needed a new camera and I got one that I was looking at before, but couldnt come up with the $140 before Black Friday. I got it on sale at 5am for $50
It was well worth facing the crouds for it. All together that day we ended up saving ourselves almost $500. And it was mostly stuff we needed around the house. I love a good deal

Answer 4: My money-saving strategy consists of 3 components. First, buying only what is absolutely needed (what I WANT is not even a consideration at this point). Second, making a list of needed items and absolutely sticking to it. Third, searching on the internet for coupons, clipping coupons from newspapers, and scouring sales ads. If its not on sale, I dont buy it. If I have a coupon, I may double up depending on the item. I have been able to get an oil change for $15 with a coupon, a free haircut, and 50% off service/maintenance for my car from stations trying to "drum up business". The economy is my enemy and I will not be conquered. I plan on winning this war.

If i dont buy my clothes there I go right for the clearance racks~the best way to save
If you dont shop any of these stores or do garage sales now is the time. Its a great way to save some money, I cant even imagine how much I have saved throughout the years.
I have to say this is an impressive money saving stunt that can be used by anyone.
I recommend it
Oh and there is so much you can find, whether it be furniture, kitchen accessories, electronics, just endless.

Answer 6: I had both an expensive cell plan and full cable/internet package for my home. I decided to roll everything into one. I now have a Smartphone with a data package instead of internet and cable in my house. I also do not have a landline. Thus I am able to access everything I need from my phone. Ive found that anything which cant be done at home usually can wait until I get into the office the next day. Having basic cable has frankly been a blessing because I waste less time. Sometimes this arrangement is inconvenient because anything internet related must be done via my phone, but all in all Ive been saving about $100.00 /mo. because of it.

Answer 7: Planning to be bumped.
We take two trips a year to Myrtle Beach SC to visit my parents. One at Christmas the other for Easter.
These are short 1 hour flights on Spirit Air from Atlantic City NJ to Myrtle Beach. A pair of round trip tickets cost 450-650.
Last year, having learned from past experiences that Spirit always overbooks we “budgeted a couple extra days. Planning to return on Monday but not needing to return till Wednesday.
On the day of our return flight we offered up our seats at check in if needed. Spirit gave us two round trip tickets plus seating on another plane home on Wednesday PLUS they gave us an additional $200 each, because they accidently loaded our luggage and two $50 vouchers for future flights.
We are flying down to Myrtle Beach this Christmas on the free ticket vouchers and planning to offer up our seats for the return trip on Monday AGAIN.
As of now the first seat of tickets cost us about 650 – the two comp free round trip worth 495- the $400 they gave us – the two $50 vouchers puts us ahead by $345.00.
I hope we get bumped again this Christmas.

Answer 8: The most impressive money saving stunt till date:
Daily, I would spend $10.00 to 20.00 a day on take-out/fast food, at least 5 days a week. That was $50.00 to $100.00 a wk. multipy it times 4, monthly $200.00 to $400.00. For the last couple months, I have only purchased fast food twice a month. I have even lost a few pounds. Talk about saving money.
