Debt Collector Calling Wrong Number

We periodically receive calls from people that clearly have the wrong number. Recently, a message was received on our answering machine looking for someone who clearly does not live in our household. However, the scary thing is that their message stated, "by considering this call, you are acknowledging that you are (and then the person's name). We don't know who they are looking for and clearly they have the wrong number. The company calling is Asset Acceptance and after hearing this message I did a little Internet research and read some scary things about this company.

Since they clearly have the wrong number, is there anything I need to be worried about? Should I just ignore these calls or should I worry that they will be able to find some way to strap us with some stranger's debt? I know it sounds silly, but hearing that message just sounded so scary!


Don't avoid it. Send one letter and this is going to be an important step in resolving the matter completely. I am assuming that you are 100% sure about this debt not yours and Asset Acceptance is mistaken in locating the person. You'll need to send a cease and desist letter through US certified mail. Mark return receipt requested so that you are confirmed they have received your letter. If anything happens later, you will be able to prove your actions done this time to stop them from calling you.

Asset Acceptance will be violating the laws if they try to contact you after receiving your letter. Read the FDCPA laws and arm yourself. Find a sample letter here.

Thanks for your prompt reply. As I indicated earlier, they left this message on our answering machine and it is pretty clear that they are attempting to contact someone we don't know. We have had out current number for only two years and in that time we have received numerous calls (from the local library to the local video store) looking for this, and another, person. Normally, we just tell them that they have the wrong number. It's pretty clear that we have their old number. This one, however, just sounded so bad that I found it very upsetting and annoying.
