RJM
I was just contacted by RJM about a debt that was paid in 2001 to a different debt collector, I owed the debt in the first place and paid it the second it went to collections. RJM is the fifth debt collector since to try to collect the same debt. Does anyone know what I can do to stop this? Short of murdering these morons of course.

All you can do is send debt validation letters with proof of the original payment as soon as you receive the first communication with them. Keep up an checking your credit reports on a regular basis (I check mine monthly) to make sure that no new creditors are getting slipped in there without your knowledge.
Straightening it all out
The frustration you may be experiencing is with the entire debt documentation process. I've dealt with a number of debt collectors over the years, both for valid and invalid debts, and I find RJM is pretty decent. The opportunity to clear old valid debts off the credit reports (the only draw for us) at half price is pretty attractive. If you send the money they ask for and they cash the check but the ding is still on your credit report, you can call them or file a dispute with the credit bureau(s) affected.
RJM buys debts at less than 50 cents on the dollar and tries to turn a profit by clearing them at a discount. In my case the debts were valid and I welcomed the opportunity. When the debts or your identity are in dispute RJM's involvement only makes the situation worse, but for those you must dispute it with the credit bureau(s) directly anyway. Nobody else who cares has the info.

This appears to be a "BIG SCAM". I called inquiring about a book club that showed up on my wife's credit report. I asked the rep. for contact information of the book club, she said non was available. After speaking with her I called back in about 3 minutes to get the dated of purchase and I was told by the rep. I spoke with this time that the previous rep. had noted that "after speaking with her manager", they removed it from the credit report. Mind you that I only inquired of the company's name and contact info.

I do believe it is real because I had some debt from wells fargo. I called wellsfargo for the details and to see if this company was for real. They told me they did sent the collection to rjm sooo ya it sounds for real. Also it was for over $200 but they settlement is for $87.

RJM and inside info
I worked at RJM in the past. Not on the collection side (back office). Basically I had noticed some issues with debt that people should not have been responcible for and reports were filed to resolve them. The debt was there before RJM got their hands on it. Example: Finger Hut and some book club subscription things (RJM bought some "bad debt"). 90% of this IS valid debt and many debts had been cleared for people in "hard times" . Katrina victims had debt cleared (when people called) and RJM took the loss. I am sure the man who is deployed overseas would see something of the same nature. REAL collection companies love to add interest to the amounts and RJM seemed to be the most passive collection co I had ever seen. You get a mailer with a discounted amount on it and if you have a question ...call.
If you owe the money you don't need to be mad. If you truly don't you can file a report and it will clear from your credit report. If you dont FEEL like paying because it it "old debt" then you might be the reason the financial system is the way it is now.
