Just some background information... My husband and I both worked full time and made a decent living. I was laidoff from my job July 1, 2005. We still have decent credit and own our own home. We have a lot of debt on credit cards and a second mortgage on our home. I want to cry every month when the credit card bills come in - We make the minumum payments - maybe a little more when we can - but I do not see us getting anywhere. I would love to be able to make one monthly payment and feel like we are getting ahead. It has not ruined our credit yet - that is what I want to avoid. We have worked hard in the past for our credit score. We have adjusted our lifestyle now to be inline with my part time work (it took awhile). I guess my question is.. is there a way to get all of this in one monthly payment and not hurt our credit score?

If you are expecting your accounts to be delinquent sometime in the future, you need to take the step ahead and go for a debt management program. The best thing for your credit is to pay on your own. If circumstances don't allow you, go for a debt consolidation plan and put things in place. Your credit won't remain good if you start defaulting on the payments. With debt consolidation, you will put things in shape.

When I had a credit card and I owed some money on it (as a matter of fact, it was through Household Bank who years later gave me an Orchard Bank credit card), I called them and made arrangements to pay them off. Eventually, I did. You can call them and make arrangements without going to consumer credit counseling.

Beware of consumer credit counseling. They have tendency to hold your payments for a month before they send to the credit card companies. You do better working with the companies yourself.
