You are protected under the fdcpa when making payments by check or post dated checks. If they deposited it for more than or any sooner than the agreed upon terms you have grounds for legal movement against them.
I don't encourage or discourgage from giving cking information to collections agencies based on the fact that there are companies who are honest and those who are dishonest.
Checking account information is never safe if it's giving information to a collection agency or writting a check at the grocery store.

The first CA I ever worked with was URS. I began making payments via mail after they initially wanted payments made via ACH. I refused to allow that and since we began in July 05, RAB purchased the debt from them. I've continued mailing payments every month.
I never had any problems with URS but I would suggest you mail your payments as opposed to allowing them access to your bank accounts or debit/credit cards.
