I thought I did a good thing by contacting the creditors on my credit report and attempting to set up payments so that I can clear the debt away. Now I may be facing a lay off, and the amounts I set up originally are more than I can handle since I have to prepare for a move out of my apartment by February 1st. Do debt collectors/agencies have programs for hardships available or can they threaten me for wanting to lower my payments?

Please advise.....

Thanks,

There's no crying in credit! :)

First off - you did a great idea. Don't blame yourself because you life changed. You were right and honorable to work out the plans.

First question: Have you called the creditors back and explained how your life will change financially? Be proactive as you were before and you may be surprised how things will work out. If they were easy to work with before, you may have some luck altering your plan, especially if you have been meeting your obligation. Showing that you honored your original agreement may help in reworking it.

Since you have registered, you will be contacted about your current situation so they can understand where you are now and where you can go. Aricka, we have all been there. Just hang in there, try to stay level headed, and you will get through it.

No not yet--I just got wind that our company may be doing some "organizational changes" last week...good thing is I"m getting some pretty swanky job offers so I'm not completely in the red on leads. I'm going to make some phone calls tomorrow during my lunch and see what they say. Thanks Jeff :).

Not as overwhelmed when things are put into perspective :).

Oh....it's easy to panic. Just take a breath, and then get your mind back to the logical side.

Good to hear you have other offers in the wings. But you are smart to think ahead. If anything, just a call to the creditors to ask about renegociating your plans wouldn't hurt. Be prepared. And when the awesome job offer comes in, just keep paying at your current plan if you are able.
