Will inquiries by landlords checking my credit be counted against my credit score? I am going to move and may apply for more than one rental.

I think its a shame that they have to check credit for everything. Especially employment. If you had a good job maybe you wouldnt be behind on credit. Also car insurance thats crazy. I have had car insurance with the same company for over 20 years and they still check credit. KYSIDE38

I know landlords do background checks too. I am not sure how fair that can be to a lot of people. I would not be concerned about a lot of people with some sort of criminal background, but there are a lot I would not want as neighbors, so who knows.... As far as credit checks, I know my prior landlord was concerned about what kind of prior rental history someone had more than the credit score. Apparently, he can check to see if there had been an eviction or if someone had trashed a place.

Here in OH there is a tenant screening company called FABCO that alot of landlords use before they approve or deny a lease.

Quote:

We provide members with a Technical Help Line to answer all questions.

This is a list of what FABCO can find for landlords.

Yeah it is a shame that 1) we have all kinds of privacy laws in this country, but 2) if we want to do anything like get a new job or apartment, then we have to sign a piece of paper that gives up our right to all that privacy...

From an employers standpoint, I guess I can come up with 2 theories:

A) If you are applying to be my accountant or bookkeeper, I might want to look at your credit. If I see that you can't manage your own finance, why should I think you can manage mine?

B) Maybe the thinking is that someone who has bad credit and problems paying their bills, will always be looking for "more" money. If I put you in a position where you are handling cash, you might be tempted to steal some of it to pay your bills...?

Just my own theories, whether they're true or not is a different question.

DebtCruncher--

Another theory I have from an employers standpoint would be 1) If you are preparing to take your state boards to become an RN and you are addicted to painkillers. 2) I would run a drug test on you before I hire you b/c you have access to alot of painkillers and the employer would be supplying the drug addiction. I support this drug screening 100% before hiring any RN b/c they have so many people's life at hand.

Also, I support the fact that landlords are screening potential tenants for criminal background b/c I wouldn't want a sexual offender or predator living next to me and my daughter, whether they claim they are rehabilitated or not.
