Hi all, I just need some feedback. I received an offer letter to settle an account for half the amount. I had 45 days to respond to them. I typed up this neat letter asking that the it show paid in full as agreed. Well, 45 days is today and for some reason, I didn't mail the letter. I mailed off about 10 letters during that time and I must have missed this one. Anyway, what prompted me to look into this is that Alliance One is leaving nasty messages regarding this debt. The CA that made the offer for half is World Financial Network National Bank, totally different CA. So I called them on the phone and the offer for half is good until today, which like I said is the 45th day. They would like me to do a check by phone, I'm not crazy about doing that, but that's the only way they will settle this. If I do that, it does two things, I get to pay off a debt at half AND here's the best part, I can tell Alliance One to shove it. So my concern or question, should I do a check by phone?

Outlaw I wouldnt advise it. My AG always says to get it in writing first before you give them the money. I try to follow what he says because I figure he knows what he is talking about. These collection people try and put the pressure on people. Thats what I dont like. KYSIDE38

Outlaw I did two checks for NCO but it was little bills medical that I had forgot about only 30 each. They were real nice and even let me pay them on payday. That went ok but li8ke I said it was small. KYSIDE38

Are you sure this CA with the good offer is really authorized to collect the debt?

I thought it was illegal to place the same debt with more than one collector at the same time.

If you've got the separate account and the $170 and are comfortable with it...your risk to take, of course. And settling for half is pretty good. Would you be OK with it if they only mark the account "settled"?

Best,
Diva

this might add a level of comfort. World Financial Network National Bank or wfnnb is the credit company for the Limited which is the original debt. So it doesn't sound like I am dealing with a CA but the original creditor. Anyone know differently?

Outlaw, is this debt still on your credit report? If so, who does the CRA say has it? I'm following your reasoning, and it sounds quite promising to me. Wish I had some solid info. Hopefully Kyside's informant will come through.

Would you be as happy paying the $170 if it gets marked "settled" instead of "PIF as agreed"?

I've got my fingers crossed for you--on this and all the other collection issues you're working on. Really appreciate the updates, I'm learning a lot.

Best,
Diva
who would bend down to pick up $170 if I saw it lying in the street...

Outlaw -

Will they extend the offer if you send them a check by mail? Some CA's will do that for you if you discuss the situation with them. If not, have you checked out this company's reputation with the BBB? If they seem on the up and up, I guess you might be ok with giving them a check by phone.

And if you are dealing with the original creditor, I would say you are probably safe giving them a check by phone - it's just giving that info to a CA that I would be cautious of.

Yep, it sounds like I am dealing with the original creditor. I think it is all on the up and up. Plus they will send me a letter showing it paid as agreed and closed. I think I will set it up. I know I posted alot on this one topic but it makes me nervous when stuff like this comes up. Them being the original creditor helps too. Thanks all!
