can any one give me some tips for this situation... a company called Merchants Credit Guide contacted me on behalf of Palisades Collections, LLC. They told me that I had an outstanding debt to ATT for approx 600.00.

I called MCG and told them that I wanted "validation" of the debt I owe and told them that I would be submitting it in writing.

I have however, had an account with ATT. I did call them and they told me that there was a charged off amount. This account that I had with ATT is years old and I honestly do not remember getting any statements showing that I was past due with anything.

I contacted ATT (that's when I found out I had an account charged off) and they told me that they don't know why my account was charged off and that they did not have any information on my account anymore.

They told me that I could obtain the information from the people that are contacting me re the possible debt that I owe, that leaves palisades.

I looked up palisades and saw that there were alot of weird issues re: their ATT collections.

Since there was a charge off on my ATT account, they are implying that there was a debt that was owed but not collected, but I find it very hard to believe that I would not have gotten any contact about this sooner, nor that I would have ignored a 600.00 bill.

Point is, I don't trust palisades. How do I know that the information they are giving to me is actually acurate since the original creditors don't have the information on my account to compare it to?

Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely get a letter requesting debt validation into their hands. Send it certified mail, return receipt requested, so they will have to sign for it, indicating they have received it.

If they validate the debt, you will have something more to work with. If they refuse to, then you also have something to work with - just in a different manner.

Row, since the debt is charged off, check the SOL of your state. Maybe, the statute on this debt is already expired and you can't be sued.

I believe you should have done some payment activity on this AT&T account in the past. Can you go through your past bank statements and figure out the payments made? If you can find this info, the figures given out by MCG can be verified and if necessary, put the incorrect item on dispute.

Send a debt validation letter to Palisades also. They should be having more info about this account if they are the ones purchasing from AT&T. Send it certified and return receipt requested. Check your credit copy to know if there is any negative item reported by this company. There must be an authorized purpose if there is an item found. Incorrect collection entries hurt the credit scores severely.
