Can anyone tell me where to look about debt validation? I want to know exactly what the collector is supposed to send and if it is the right info.

thanks

Once you send the debt validation request, the collectors are bound by federal laws to provide you the following info mentioned here.

Though it might happen that the collector will not provide every info you requested, but at least they should be able to prove their collection is legitimate. It will be better if you know the original company and make arrangements with them. Collections are a negative status in the credit file. I will prefer to stay away from them as much as possible and deal with the creditors directly.

Welcome to the Forums :D aneblat is right, don't be surprised if they do not validate, or do so completely. Be sure and keep copies of everything you send, phone calls, etc. If they do not validate, I send a follow up letter to vlaidated. I have had one trying to get to validate for a year now, with no sucess, but I have proof I have been trying ..Good Luck..KAren

And frankly, I think Bossy is being generous. Me, I send a DV, then when I get the receipt back, I staple it to my copy of the letter, file it, and forget about it. I don't think there's any need for me to worry about it unless and until they validate, because if they don't validate, they can't collect.

(Of course, there's checking to make sure your credit report is accurate, but that doesn't have to do with dealing with the CA itself.)
