My ex husband and I are desperately trying to get rid of credit debt accumulated during our marriage. It totals approx. $15000 and that's after years of working to pay it down with huge interest rates.

Welcome to the site! Since you have registered, a consultant will be contacting you soon for a free debt counseling session over the phone. They will offer options for debt consolidation or settlement. You are not obligated to use their particular program, however. If you feel their program is not a good fit for your needs, you may want to browse our Ranking Chart of credit counseling agencies listed by state:

Also, while you're waiting for that phone call, make sure you have a copy of your current credit report. One can be obtained from all credit reporting agencies at annualcreditreport.com. It's free, once per year, or anytime you've been rejected for credit.

Consolidation program will lower down the present interest rate. You will also get most of the fees waived off. In case, you are unable to afford the repayments set in the plan, debt settlement will be helpful. Here, the payments are much lower from consolidation. Speak with a debt counselor for your options. He will discuss with your creditors on settling the outstanding balance.
