First off---If you only owe $20.00 you should not have to pay $145.00---that is wrong! I don't think they have grounds to file anything (assuming they were an on the level company, which sounds like they are NOT). Why don't you tell them you are sending $20.00 and nothing more. BTW---have they stated what the extra charges are for? Sounds very suspicious to me.

The question, I guess, is what would be a fair fee? You may need to bring that up with the AG office.

They bought your debt so they have to follow fdcpa.Read the information and send a dv letter to them with a clause in it stating calls at home are inconvenient, communicate by written method only.Next step is to verify if they are even licensed to do business in your state.Lastly,do not let them get you stressed out. The only one who can press criminal charges is law enforcement.
help again

First thing is that you do not have the contract with them, so the breech of contract is not with them. I can't imagine buying a $20 debt, they are really getting low now. Make them validate the debt, google a debt validation letter. Make sure they own it, they should not be charging you that much to settle the debt either. When they call tell them you are waiting on a response from your states attorney generals office, then make a complaint with the attorney general's office. Don't be afraid of these bottom feeders. What state are you from?

You won't go to jail---and they are just trying to scare you. Don't let them get to you. Definitely get them to validate the debt. See what happens is when someone comes back at them with correct information and knowing about things like debt validation letters, they start to realize that you are not going to buy into their overcharging. Empower yourself with knowledge and then you will feel confident in your contact with them.

All states have a fixed charge on collections. You may inquire the information from your state attorney general's office. The charges should also be available in the contract copy signed with the original creditor. Norman Kalina must not charge anything more than your state laws.
