My husband received a debt collection letter from a company called NCO Financial Systems, stating that they had purchased a debt from Chase Providian for over $7000. The problem is that we have never had an account with this company and do not owe this money. I've already sent the validation letter to them as well as filed a complaint with the FTC, my states Atorney Generals office and also with ACA International. My question is, Can this company report a debt that doesn't exist to the credit reporting agencies as their letter states they will?
Further more when I googled the name chase providian, another web site came up, where hundreds of other people have received this letter for a debt they never had. Can this be legal?

Sounds fishy...Chase and Providian are two different companies. If you don't own the money, you have no obligation to pay it. If it shows up on you credit report for some reason, you can dispute it and have it removed.
I don't think the letters should be legal, but I'm not aware of a law that says otherwise, which is terrible. Hopefully soon, the government and other federal agencies will start cracking down on scammers and spammers!

Hi pacurn

Please pull your latest credit report to know your financial standing.

If a negative entry appears in your credit report, you have the right to legally dispute it and get it removed from your credit file.

If a disputed item is verified and the negative information is still seen in your credit report, you can add a 100 word statement explaining the particular item.
