In my opinion, unless you're applying to be a bank manager or some government jobs, it's none of their business and an invasion of privacy.

I have been fortunate...I have a really good job and my poor credit did not prevent them from hiring me but I have known several people who have been denied jobs for poor credit...

I am with Law Student on this one. Unless the job is in the financial industry, or dealing with money in some other way, there is no way that this should be an issue.

I agree with the majority on this one.If you don't hold a position dealing with money or private financial records, there is no point in doing this.It would accomplish more to do a background check.

I agree cajun. I would rather know if a convicted felon was working for me than someone with poor credit.

Me too. I would also think that if someone's handling money on the job audits should be able to pick up whether they're ripping off the company or not. But actually a coworker of mine in my prior job discovered that someone had stolen a page of checks when a check cashing company called to verify a check she had written to herself!!!!!

Took checks AND wrote them out to herself??? WOW!!!
But....yes I would also want criminal background if I was hiring, and they do that too, along with the credit check. A friend of mine was just turned down for a job last Friday, they did a credit check and criminal check.....she has a clean record, but credit is not to good. And the job was like a telemarketer job. Did they think she was going to take the phone?? Almost impossible to get a good job if they are going to do this. Wonder if Burger King checks credit....

Countrygirl, was your friend up front about her credit? At a former employer, a person could get in with a lower credit score/more negative remarks if they volunteered the information when given the background check/credit check form. If she isn't forthcoming in the future, it can only hurt her.
Credit checks for a telemarketer...they can have access to a lot of PID info...possibly your friend was going to be required to be bonded, or the company's liability insurance would not cover her.

Being forthcoming can never hurt you--especially if you are looking for a job after being terminated. It's always better to come forward with bad news to an employer because it's worse if they discover it. You can kiss your chances of getting a job goodbye at that point.
As for credit checks on a telemarketer, they would be privy to some personal information, such as account numbers--but I still disagree with a credit check for a job like this. People in my industry are also bonded when they work in the field, but I have never seen an occasion where a credit check was done.
